Getting to Switzerland

After living in Australia for 7 years I decided it was time to move on.

I really wanted to go and try to improve my French. I thought about Belgium where I had lived as a small child and France itself but decided I’d like to try Switzerland.

By this point I had been introduced to a few of the concepts behind getting what you really want and so I set about it in more structured way than I had the move to Australia and points in between.

I researched and researched but it was not looking good. I visualised and tried every angle I could think of. My language skills were not good enough and my skills were such that language skills were going to matter (sometime for really technical roles, language is not so important).

Having learned the principles I was really annoyed. I really really really want this – so why can it not be I fumed.

After a while though I got tired of banging my head against the brick wall and decided I would go back to the UK instead. I set about planning this instead. Much easier – I’d take language classes instead and visit Switzerland.

…yup you guessed it….

A friend rang me up one day and said : “Do remember my friend James* who we used to work with?”. “Yes” I said, vaguely remembering. “Well he just rang me from Switzerland where he move a year or so ago. I’d lost track of him. Anyway he retrained in what you are doing now and they are looking for people”.

I swear I just stared at the phone in disbelief. He had no idea I was interested in moving to Switzerland (I am not sure he recalled who I was at that point), had not spoken to my friend in over a year since he’d moved and had retrained into something I had also retrained to even though we came at it from different aspects.

The end result was 2 months later I was getting off a plane in Geneva to go and work for a company who had not only provided the visa I so desperately needed but airfares, moving costs and a flat.

The secret being I had let go, not in anger or disappointment, I’d just redirected my energy.
